Ashwagandha Dosage: How Much to Take Daily

Clinical trials of ashwagandha cluster at 300–600 mg per day of a standardized root extract, usually split into two doses and run for at least eight weeks. That milligram figure only means something once you know the withanolide percentage behind it — and a root-only extract at 600 mg is not interchangeable with a root-and-leaf extract at 120 mg, even when the labels imply the same strength.

For most adults, 300–600 mg daily of a root extract standardized to at least 5% withanolides is the range with the strongest randomized-trial support, taken with food, for a minimum of eight weeks. Higher-concentration root-and-leaf extracts are dosed far lower — roughly 125–250 mg for Sensoril and 60–120 mg for Shoden. Never convert between the two by milligrams alone. The two extract types differ in which withanolides they contain, not just how much.

Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) is one of the few botanicals where the dosing question has real trial data behind it rather than tradition alone. The catch is that the published doses are attached to specific branded extracts with specific standardizations, and most shelf products don't tell you enough to match them. This guide covers what the trials actually used, how the main extract types compare, and where a lower dose is the correct choice.

How Much Ashwagandha Per Day Do Studies Actually Use?

The most-cited protocol is 300 mg twice daily — 600 mg total — of a root extract standardized to 5% withanolides. That's the dose in the 2012 randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial that reported a 27.9% drop in serum cortisol over 60 days against 7.9% for placebo (Chandrasekhar et al., Indian J Psychol Med, 2012), and the same 300 mg twice-daily protocol used in the 2019 insomnia and anxiety trial that ran for 10 weeks (Langade et al., Cureus, 2019).

There's also direct dose-response evidence, which is rarer than it should be in supplement research. A 2019 study randomized healthy adults to 250 mg/day, 600 mg/day, or placebo for 56 days. Both active doses lowered serum cortisol against placebo, but the 600 mg arm did so far more decisively (P < 0.0001 versus P < 0.05 at 250 mg), and stress-scale improvements followed the same gradient (Salve et al., Cureus, 2019).

Fertility research used more. The 2013 pilot study in men with low sperm count dosed 675 mg daily, split three ways, for 90 days. A 2025 systematic review and meta-analysis pooling 15 randomized trials across 873 participants found significant cortisol reduction at the eight-week mark, which is roughly where the whole literature converges: 300–600 mg, twice daily, eight weeks minimum.

Why Aren't Root-Only and Root-and-Leaf Doses Interchangeable?

This is the part almost every dosage guide skips, and it's the reason milligram-to-milligram comparisons between products fail. Ashwagandha root and ashwagandha leaf do not contain the same withanolides.

Withaferin A — the most pharmacologically aggressive withanolide in the plant — is concentrated in the leaves at roughly 8–10 mg/g and is essentially absent from the root. The root instead supplies withanolide A and 12-deoxywithastramonolide at around 0.5–1 mg/g. So an extract standardized to "10% withanolides" that includes leaf material is not a stronger version of a 5% root extract. It's a different compound mixture with a different pharmacology.

Practically, this means the dose that matters is the one attached to the extract that was actually studied. Matching the withanolide percentage on two different products does not make their doses equivalent, and this is exactly the label problem covered in our supplement label guide.

How Do KSM-66, Sensoril, and Shoden Doses Compare?

Three standardized extracts account for most of the published human data, and each has its own dose range. A fourth category — plain root powder with no stated standardization — has no research-anchored dose at all.

The Shoden figures come from a 60-day randomized trial that tested 60 mg and 120 mg against placebo and reported total testosterone rising 22% and 33% respectively, against 4% in the placebo group. That a 120 mg dose produces effects comparable to 600 mg of a root extract is the clearest possible illustration of why the milligram number on its own tells you nothing.

Non-standardized root powder is the genuinely difficult case. Withanolide content in raw root varies with growing conditions, harvest timing, and which section of root is milled, so a gram of one supplier's powder may carry several times the active load of another's. If a label states only "ashwagandha root, 500 mg," there is no honest way to map it onto a trial dose.

Ashwagandha Dosage by Goal

Different endpoints in the literature came from different doses, and it's worth matching yours to the outcome you care about rather than defaulting to the highest number on the shelf.

Stress and cortisol. 300 mg twice daily of a 5% root extract is the best-supported protocol, with clear dose-response evidence favoring 600 mg/day over 250 mg/day. This is also the range for general adaptogenic use.

Sleep. The 2019 insomnia trial used the same 300 mg twice-daily dose across 10 weeks, with the second dose in the evening. Effects were larger in participants who started with genuinely poor sleep. Testosterone and fertility. Two very different doses apply here: 120 mg of a 35% root-and-leaf extract, or 675 mg daily of root extract split three ways in the oligospermia pilot. The underlying evidence and its limits are covered in our ashwagandha research overview.

Thyroid. 600 mg daily measurably raised T3 and T4 and lowered TSH in subclinical hypothyroid patients over eight weeks. Read that as a dose-dependent caution as much as a benefit — the same amount pushes thyroid hormones in a direction that's actively unwanted in hyperthyroidism.

Should You Take Ashwagandha Morning or Night?

Take it with food. Gastrointestinal upset — nausea, loose stools, stomach discomfort — is the most common complaint, it's dose-related, and a meal blunts it substantially.

Most trials at 600 mg split the dose morning and evening, so twice-daily is the protocol with the best evidentiary footing. At 300 mg or below, once daily is fine and there's no reason to complicate it. The high-concentration root-and-leaf extracts are dosed once daily in their own trials.

Timing within the day is less settled than the internet suggests. Cortisol follows a diurnal curve, and it's a reasonable hypothesis that morning dosing better targets the morning cortisol peak, but no trial has tested morning-versus-evening head to head. How Long Before It Works, and Do You Need to Cycle?

Eight weeks is the floor. Every trial cited in this guide ran 56 days or longer before measuring outcomes, and the 2025 meta-analysis found its significant cortisol effect at the eight-week point. Nothing in the literature supports judging ashwagandha after a week.

On long-term use, a 2025 prospective observational study followed 191 healthy adults aged 18–65 taking a standardized root extract for 12 months, with monthly clinical assessment and laboratory work at baseline, six months, and twelve. It recorded 18 mild adverse events, all resolving without intervention, and liver enzymes stayed within normal range throughout — ALT moved from 31.31 to 33.68 IU/L and AST from 30.61 to 29.02 IU/L (Phytotherapy Research, 2025).

That's the best available answer to the cycling question: there is no trial evidence that ashwagandha requires scheduled breaks, and the longest safety dataset ran a full year of continuous use without a signal. Cycling protocols circulating online are convention, not findings. That said, an observational study is weaker evidence than a controlled trial, and 191 people is not a large safety population.

When a Lower Dose Is the Right Dose

Start at half your target for the first week or two. If you're aiming at 600 mg, begin at 300 mg; it costs you almost nothing on an eight-week timeline and it surfaces digestive intolerance before you're taking a full dose twice a day.

Some people should not be dose-escalating at all. A 2020 case series in Liver International documented five patients — three in Iceland, two from the US Drug-Induced Liver Injury Network — who developed cholestatic or mixed-pattern liver injury with jaundice after two to twelve weeks of ashwagandha use. All recovered without transplant, but the onset window overlaps exactly with the period most people are ramping up. Jaundice, dark urine, or unexplained fatigue means stop and get liver enzymes checked, not push through.

Ashwagandha is classified as an abortifacient in traditional Ayurvedic texts and is not recommended in pregnancy at any dose. It shouldn't be combined with sedatives, thyroid medication, or immunosuppressants without medical supervision, and anyone with hyperthyroidism or an autoimmune condition should treat the standard 600 mg as a dose to discuss with a doctor rather than a default.

Leaf material contributes withaferin A, which is essentially absent from root, so the compound profiles differ rather than just the concentration.
